Here it is, our first post! And what a great way to begin our blog, by sharing the amazing work that our sixth graders have done this week! Every week our students create galleries of their learning. These galleries demonstrate their knowledge of work we've done all week long in class in reading and writing. Students demonstrate knowledge of three types of comprehension each week, literal, interpretive, and critical. Literal comprehension includes demonstration of an understanding of the plot, setting, and characters of the text. Interpretive comprehension includes demonstration of thinking deeper about the text, by reading between the lines of what the author has written. Critical comprehension is a demonstration of high level thinking about text, such as looking at character motivations and struggles, implicit and explicit information and ideas, or analyzing the viewpoint of the author. In addition to these three comprehensions, each week students use concepts from mini lessons to share their knowledge of strategies and techniques that readers use to comprehend text. Students then add their own creative twist and present their information in a gallery format. Enjoy the incredible work of our sixth grade class!
